Spiritual growth is not about scrambling up to a metaphorical heaven to avoid a descent into hell. Rather, spiritual growth is about increasing our capacity to be spiritual, the complexity of our spirituality, and maturing our compassion to care for others.

It was not a perfect sentiment; the times when it was written meant “Men” was narrowly defined, for example. Nonetheless: the power of democracy derives from the people and is for the people in which to hold ALL dear.
